Simple tips & tricks

With its simple features and photo filters, Instagram has gained a loyal following among photography lovers and selfie fans '€” a must-have app to give a professional photo editing look to their pictures. Below are several tips on how to use Instagram from the platform:

BRING IN YOUR CIRCLE

Find your friends who are already using Instagram by clicking '€œFind Friends'€ on your profile tab. It will bring a list of people who have connected their Facebook and Twitter accounts to Instagram. Additionally, you can input contact lists from your phone to produce more connections.

EXPLORE!

The '€œSearch & Explore'€ tab generates a tailored list of photos, videos and people you might like. The tab will show posts that are liked by a large number of people in the Instagram community.

'€œI just use the explore page. When you'€™re looking at the explore page, you'€™re seeing images that are being triggered by all the people that you follow and what they'€™re liking, what they'€™re engaging with, so essentially what you follow is what you see in many ways,'€ said Teru Kuwayama, a member of Instagram'€™s community team and a former war photographer. '€œI think that is an interesting thing, in that every single person'€™s experience is completely different.'€

#HASHTAGS

Putting a suitable hashtag on your photos will bring you to find new followers with the same interests or locations. Choosing specific tags will connect you to like-minded people. For instance, instead of putting the tag #car, you could explain more by using #ferrari.

'€œWhat I do is put hashtags on my location '€” the city and the country. For example, when I uploaded photos with hashtag #Jakarta, some people made comments on my photos '€” suggesting interesting sites in the city,'€ said American documentary photographer Lauren DeCicca.

DISCOVER MORE

New experiences are just a click away. You can take a journey to the moon by following the National Aeronatics and Space Administration (NASA) account, @nasa, see the adventures of a hand-holding couple around the world on @muradosmann, or join 29.1 million Instagram users to take a closer look to the life of celebrity Kim Kardashian on @kimkardashian.

'€œI follow a thousand different accounts. They range from everything from a chef from Thailand traveling and cooking around the world. I see a lot of stuff in the military community. I see a lot of stuff from journalists around the world,'€ said Teru.

TOUCH UP

Instagram provides plenty of ways to improve and decorate your photos. First, there are dozens of photographic filters '€” ranging from the faded soft-look '€œSierra'€ to the color vibrant '€œX-Pro II'€. Some filters have their own borders. However, you can choose to forego that.

The contrast and exposure of your photo can be adjusted by clicking a button of a sun symbol, known as Lux effect.

How to best apply the filters? '€œIt is up to each person. The important thing is to create your style and not just follow the trend,'€ said Genies Vinonda Wilhelmina, a 21-year-old university student with 51,800 followers.
