icrosoft Devices Indonesia aims to integrate cloud computing into its mobile phones with the launch of two new phones on Monday equipped with cloud computing services.
"Our services now have the motto 'mobile first, cloud first'. All Microsoft services are integrated to the cloud service, from applications like Skype to Microsoft Office," Microsoft Devices Indonesia marketing manager Irwan Hermawan told The Jakarta Post in Senayan, South Jakarta, on Monday.
Irwan was speaking on the sidelines of an event to launch Microsoft's Lumia 640 LTE and Lumia 640 XL DS (Dual SIM), which feature cloud-integrated applications, as a follow-up to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's recent announcement in that direction.
Customers purchasing the latest Lumia phones receive free Office365 Personal services for a year worth Rp 719,000 (US$55) and 1 TB of OneDrive cloud storage accessible from various devices. Cloud storage allows users to access their files and work without having to physically transfer the files.
Both phones feature 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB internal mass memory. They are powered by high speed, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processors running the Windows Phone 8.1 operating system with Lumia Denim.
While both have ClearBlack Display and Corning Gorilla Glass 3, the Lumia 640 LTE has a 5-inch screen while the 640 XL DS has the larger 5.7-inch screen.
The 640 LTE comes with an 8 MP rear camera and 1 MP front camera, while the 640 XL DS has a better 13 MP Zeiss Optic rear camera and a 5 MP wide angle front camera.
Another difference is that the 640 LTE has a 4G connection while the 640 XL DS focuses more on customers who need the flexibility of communicating with two SIM cards on one device.
The Lumia 640 LTE will be sold at Rp 2.59 million and the Lumia 640 XL will be priced at Rp 2.99 million. Microsoft, however, is offering a special price of Rp 1.89 million for the 640 LTE for a limited period. There are also special packages from cellular operator Telkomsel for both handsets.
Responding to questions on the lack of Windows apps for its mobile devices, Irwan said that the company aimed to have an universal app store offering applications that could be used in various devices with the advent of the Windows 10 operating system.
"Soon, developers can just do one-time coding for applications to be used in tablets, phones and PCs," he said.
Customers have long complained about the lack of apps available on the Windows Store. Rivals Android and iOS both have some 1.4 million apps in their respective stores, while there are only about 300,000 mobile apps on offer in the Windows Store. (fsu/nvn)(+++)
