nlike the patient gestures he usually displayed when responding to questions or comments, Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna H. Laoly expressed anger while answering criticisms by local leaders of political parties who were still fighting over leadership issues during a national gathering on Monday.
The meeting, which gathered leaders from all regions throughout the archipelago to discuss the local elections that are to take place simultaneously in December this year, got heated when Yasonna presented the possible impacts that Golkar and the United Development Party (PPP) might face should they fail to settle their infighting, stirring harsh criticisms as well as shouts from the participants.
"Don't get angry with me. Please direct your criticisms to the elites [of Golkar and PPP]. Ask them why they cannot make an end to the fighting that is turning into a psychological battle [between them]," Yasonna said, striking back at his critics who launched a thinly veiled protest over Yasonna's alleged misuse of power by taking the sides of factions that supported President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's administration.
Yasonna also emphasized that reconciliation appeared as the best way for Golkar and PPP to be able to join the race.
Local leaders attending the meeting have warned of potential conflicts taking place in the regions if Golkar and the PPP are banned from participating in the elections as a consequence of their failure to solve their infighting. (hhr)
