Taliban attack in remote Afghan province kills 16 policemen

An Afghan official says Taliban attacks on police checkpoints in a remote northwestern province have killed at least 16 policemen.

Lawmaker Nilofer Ibrahimi from Badakhshan province said on Monday that the attacks happened the previous night in the province.

He says 13 of the killed policemen were members of border police units while the three others were public protection officers.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the coordinated attack on Sunday night, saying in a statement to media that the assaults were part of the insurgents' spring offensive launched late last month.

Ibrahimi says that seven other policemen are still missing following the attacks. (*****)
