Jakarta city councilors complain about salary delay

Jakarta city councilors are complaining that they have not received their salaries and allowances this year.

Councilors, civil servants and contract workers in the Jakarta administration have yet to receive their allowances or monthly salaries because of the delay in the approval of the 2015 city budget. The delay was caused by disagreements between the city administration and the city councilors on the draft 2015 budget.

Deputy council speaker Mohamad Taufik of the Gerindra Party said that he had received complaints from a number of councilors who were wondering why they hadn't been paid their salaries by the city administration from January until May.

"Many councilors have come to me and asked about their salaries. I haven't received mine either," Taufik said in the City Council (DPRD) building on Tuesday.

Taufik said that the councilors understood that the delay in salary disbursement was due to the disagreements between the councilors and the city administration on the 2015 budget, which resulted in a delay of approval for the budget.

"However, the budget has now been approved and the funds can already be used. So it's normal that the councilors are demanding their rights," Taufik said.(+++)
