Indonesia urges Singapore to review recruitment system for Indonesian workers

I

ndonesian Manpower Minister Hanif Dhakiri is urging Singapore to review its direct-hiring recruitment system, as it is an obstacle for the Indonesian government to list and protect its citizens who work in the city-state.

The request was conveyed by Hanif when he met with Singaporean Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say in Singapore on Wednesday.

'€œTo support us in protecting and listing workers working in Singapore, we would like to ask Singapore to review its direct-hiring system because the system creates problems for the Indonesian government and the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore,'€ Hanif said as quoted by Kompas.com on Thursday.

According Hanif, Law No. 39 on Indonesian workers regulates that Indonesian workers employed abroad should register themselves with private recruitment agencies (PPTKIS), so that the government can give them protection.

'€œDirect hiring recruits the workers directly without informing PPTKIS or the agency,'€ Hanif said.

Lim promised to provide feedback on the matter after consulting with his government. (naf)(++++)
