P

resident Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo has revealed his target for the start of the light rail transit (LRT) project this year in a meeting with Jakarta Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama at the Presidential Palace on Friday.

'€œHe wants the groundbreaking to happen this year. The tender [for the project] should take place at least by June,'€ Ahok was quoted as saying by kompas.com.

Ahok said that the Jakarta administration would cooperate with a Japanese company for LRT procurement and a Chinese company for infrastructure development under the light rail. Local companies will also be involved in the project.

The project is slated to be finished by 2018, before the Asian Games are held in Jakarta, among other cities.

The administration is slated to develop seven lines, with the main depot located in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta.

Each line will have 20 trains. An LRT train will have three cars and a capacity of 628 passengers.

The lines will be Kebayoran Lama-Kelapa Gading at 21.6 kilometers long, Tanah Abang-Pulo Mas (17.6 km), Pesing-Soekarno Hatta airport (18.5 km), Joglo-Tanah Abang (11 km), Puri Kembangan-Tanah Abang (9.3 km), Pesing-Kelapa Gading (20.7 km) and Cempaka Putih-Ancol (10 km).

The estimated cost of the project is Rp 30 trillion (US$2.28 billion).

The project will complement the Jakarta mass rapid transit (MRT) system currently under construction, with the first phase having started in October 2013.

The MRT project is also scheduled to be finished by 2018, although the development might be halted due to various problems, such as land acquisition. (fsu)
