Jakarta to host international 10k run

Jakarta is set to hold its annual international 10-kilometer run on May 31 as part of the city's 488th anniversary celebrations.

The run will start at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta, pass along Jl. Budi Kemuliaan, Jl. Abdul Muis, Jl. Majapahit, Jl. Gadjah Mada and return to Monas along the same route.

Organized by the Jakarta Sports and Youth Agency and PT Nestle's Milo brand, 35,000 runners are expected to compete in the race.

Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said the city would provide prizes for winners totaling up to Rp 911 million (US$69,393).

"Many Jakartans are not used to a healthy lifestyle and therefore we encourage residents to participate in order to understand the benefits of running," Ahok said at City Hall on Friday.

Jakarta commemorates its anniversary on June 22.
