resident Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo inaugurated the development of the Makassar New Port in Makassar, South Sulawesi on Friday, stressing the importance of developing connectivity by sea among the islands to develop the economy and all other sectors.
"We focus on the development [of the maritime sector] because two-thirds of Indonesian territory is ocean. In view of that, connectivity among islands is important," Jokowi said, adding that seaports throughout the country needed to be revitalized.
The President stated that with good connectivity, the cost of distributing goods will drop.
According to the plan, the development of the first phase of the Rp 3 trillion (US$228 million) Makassar New Port, covering an area of 250 hectares, would finish in 2018 and was financed by state-owned Bank Mandiri, Pelindo IV director Mulyono said.
After the second phase of the port was developed, the whole new port would have the capacity of 4.2 million TEU (20-foot equivalent unit), Mulyono added. (++++)
