he National Transportation Safety Commission (KNKT) and railway operator KAI have dispatched teams to investigate the cause of a crash between a Bangunkarta passenger train serving Jakarta-Surabaya and a freight train at Waruduwur Station in Cirebon regency, West Java, on Saturday evening.
'A KNKT team has been dispatched to the accident site. A KAI internal team has also carried out an investigation at the location to identify the cause of the accident,' KAI spokesperson Agus Komarudin said as quoted by Antara in Bandung on Sunday.
He said the two teams had been at Waruduwur Station, Cirebon, since Saturday evening, and that the investigation was ongoing.
'The teams have worked in line with procedures. The KNKT must investigate every transportation incident,' said Agus, adding that the KAI internal team involved personnel from its several directorates.
'Results of the teams' investigation into the cause of the accident will be obtained in the next several days,' said Agus.
He said the accident occurred after the Bangunkarta train, which was heading to Semarang, hit the freight train from behind when the latter was at Watuduwur Station.
Train trips on the northern route suffered delays following the incident. On Sunday, only one of Watuduwur Station's tracks was functional, creating logjams.
KAI said the accident injured one person, a freight train worker who was currently being treated at Cirebon Hospital.
On Sunday, repair workers continue to attempt move several train cars that have blocked rail traffic at the station. (ebf)(+++)
