Golkar reconciliation necessary to avoid confusion over regional elections: Lawmaker

G

olkar Party lawmaker Tantowi Yahya has praised efforts by Vice President Jusuf Kalla to reconcile the two warring camps within Golkar, saying that the move would provide a short-term solution to the regional elections issue.

'€œEfforts by the Vice President are strategic and relevant to the problem. It may be short term, but it is necessary to save the regional party members from further confusion regarding participating in regional elections,'€ Tantowi said on Tuesday at the House of Representatives complex in Jakarta.

Tantowi reminded that long-term challenges for Golkar after reconciliation would include the party'€™s stance on the government.

'€œAburizal Bakrie'€™s camp has a clear position on being an opposition party to balance the government. The rival Agung Laksono camp wants to be within the government. I guess one of the future challenges will be to decide a stance,'€ the deputy chairman of the Aburizal camp said.

The conflict between the Aburizal and Agung camps in the party is threatening Golkar'€™s eligibility to contest regional elections, which are scheduled for Dec. 9

As a result, the House had been discussing the possibility of amending the 2015 Regional Elections Law to allow the conflict-ridden Golkar to contest regional elections.

Kalla, a former Golkar chairman, is leading reconciliation efforts between the two camps, after the Jakarta State Administrative Court (PTUN) ruled in favor of Aburizal Bakrie in the Golkar leadership court case. (hhr) (++++)
