s many as 2,005 foreigners have taken refuge and are being facilitated in a number of immigration detention centers in North Sumatra, an immigration official has said.
The head of monitoring and law enforcement division at the Class I Immigration Office in Medan, Herawan Sukoajo, said 96 of the total were Bangladeshi and Myanmarese refugees who had been stranded on Pangkalan Susu waters in Langkat regency.
He said the 2,005 foreigners staying at 18 detention centers in North Sumatra were in good health.
'Four injured people were stranded on Pangkalan Susu waters yesterday. They are recovering,' said Herawan as quoted by Antara in Medan on Monday evening.
He said apart from Bangladeshis and Myanmarese, refugees in North Sumatra also came from several other conflict-hit countries, such as Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iran, Pakistan and Somalia.
'They have migrated mostly due to conflicts in their countries,' said Herawan.
He said the immigration office had sent a letter to the Bangladeshi Embassy in Jakarta, requesting that it issue travel documents for the 56 Bangladeshi citizens stranded in Pangkalan Susu. (ebf) (++++)
