edan Police arrested on Thursday University of Sumatra rector Marsaid Yushar for selling thousands of falsified certificates for Rp 10 million (US$769) to Rp 40 million each.
Besides arresting the 63-year-old resident of Mekar Sari housing complex in Medan, North Sumatra, the police also confiscated material evidence such as a printer and dozens of falsified certificates from four separate locations.
The university has operated for 12 years but has yet to obtain a permit.
Kompas.com reported on Thursday that the arrest was made after the police received many reports on the university's illegal operations. A police officer then posed as a student and obtained a post-graduate certificate without attending classes at the university.
Medan Police chief Sr. Comr. Nico Afinta said the suspect had admitted to issuing more than 1,200 bogus certificates. (rms)(+++)
