British scientist Daniel Price has kicked off the Indonesian leg of his bicycle tour to raise global awareness of climate change.
The bicycle tour is part of Price's Pole to Paris campaign which will take him from the Antarctic to Paris, the venue of the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference later this year.
While in Indonesia, Price will ride from Yogyakarta, where he has visited and filmed a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)-supported hybrid wind farm at Pandansimo beach, to the country's capital of Jakarta.
In Jakarta, Price will take part in a public cycling event organized by the Environment and Forestry Ministry and the Bike to Work community to mark World Environment Day.
'I'm very excited to be cycling through the rural parts of Indonesia to Jakarta. This country is a pivotal player in the global climate change agenda. The choices it makes at the UN Climate Change Conference will have a huge impact on the global community,' the 27-year-old scientist said in a release on Thursday.
Price is visiting and documenting communities affected by climate change, as well as renewable energy sites along a journey that takes him through Southeast Asia, China, Bangladesh, and parts of Europe.
The wind and solar power site at Pandansimo is run by the local government, the Research and Technology Ministry and the University of Gadjah Mada. Built in 2011, the site has turned the once sleepy seaside village into a thriving tourist spot thanks to the affordable supply of power.
'Pandansimo is a great example of how clean and renewable energy can provide jobs and generate revenue for local communities, particularly those who lack access to electricity,' said Price, who earned his Ph.D from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.
Price embarked in April on the 17,000 km cycle north while his partner Erlend Moster Knudsen is travelling by foot 3,000 km from the Arctic Circle to Paris. After visiting Pandansimo and the local fisherman who initiated the sustainable energy project, Price is now cycling 600 kilometres to Jakarta. (ebf)(+++)
