he rupiah exchange rate traded among banks in Jakarta on Thursday afternoon weakened by 10 points to Rp 13,189 per US dollar from Rp 13,199.
'The US dollar tended to appreciate against the majority of the world's currencies following protests against circulating news about a draft of Greece's debt agreements with creditors,' Monex Investindo Futures head of research Ariston Tjendra said in Jakarta on Thursday.
Earlier, it was rumored that debt agreements had been achieved between Greece and its creditors, including on surplus targets and investment packages.
Ariston said market players were still focusing their attention on the G7 Finance Ministers meeting, which had entered its second day. It was hoped that positive sentiments would come from the meeting and bolster the global economy.
'While waiting for the meeting's results, financial market investors have tended to keep 'safe haven' currency assets, such as US dollars,' he said.
Bank Himpunan Saudara financial market analyst Rully Nova said there was still no domestic sentiment strong enough to help the rupiah appreciate against the US dollar.
'Market players' expectations of Indonesia's economy have still tended to weaken; this situation will continue to burden the rupiah,' said the analyst.
However, Rully said it was predicted that Bank Indonesia (BI) would remain in the market to protect rupiah fluctuations from moving in a wide range, which could add to investors' worries.
BI's median rate recorded that the rupiah strengthened to Rp 13,205 per dollar on Thursday from Rp 13,229 the previous day. (ebf)(+++)
