Indonesia's anti-corruption efforts failing: DPR deputy speaker

H

ouse of Representatives (DPR) deputy speaker Fadli Zon says that anti-corruption efforts have failed because the country'€™s inefficient bureaucracy continually creates opportunities for people to commit graft.

Commenting on recent anti-corruption efforts by institutions such as the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Fadli said on Monday that the success of a country'€™s anti-corruption efforts was measured by how the number of graft cases gradually decreased.

'€œInstead, it seems that there are more and more cases happening over time. This shows that the anti-corruption efforts are failing. Why? It'€™s mostly because of the inefficient bureaucracy that we have, which greases the wheels for more corruption opportunities to be taken advantage of,'€ Fadli told reporters on the sidelines of his 44th birthday celebration at the House complex in Jakarta.

The Gerindra Party lawmaker further said that corruption was an inherent problem within the government, and something that a country could not avoid unless opportunities for corruption were effectively eliminated.

'€œUnfortunately that has not been the case here. We have to further evaluate future anti-corruption efforts and how they can be more effective,'€ he added.

Indonesia'€™s anti-corruption efforts been stymied lately as the KPK lost a third pretrial petition involving graft suspects, with the most recent case being that of former Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) chairman Hadi Poernomo, who won his pretrial motion against the KPK.

Another high-profile setback for the KPK was a case involving current Deputy National Police chief Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan, who defeated the KPK in court earlier this year in a pretrial hearing over his graft suspect status. (hhr)
