illages, Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration Minister Marwan Jafar said on Sunday that the government was on track to meet its target of overseeing the transmigration of four million people by 2019.
The government, Marwan stressed, needed to provide an attractive service, including desirable locations and adequate infrastructure, in order to maintain the program's current popularity.
He also claimed that transmigration had proved beneficial to the Indonesian economy.
'The transmigration program is proven to have helped create new jobs, and people have increased their quality of life. That's why public enthusiasm [about the program] need to be appreciated,' Marwan said in a statement on Sunday as quoted by Antara news agency.
According to the minister, besides being effective in relieving population pressure in densely populated areas, such as Java, transmigration is also an effective tool in uniting the religiously and ethnically diverse nation.
'Transmigration is not just a movement from Java to other places. This program can benefit the country in many ways. Transmigration is proven to be effective in strengthening national unity,' he said.
