Lawmaker Tubagus Hasanuddin of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has questioned the nomination of Sutiyoso as chief of the National Intelligence Agency (BIN).

"First, isn't he too old for the job? Second, as far as I know he was involved in the attack on the PDI-P's headquarters," Tubagus said on Wednesday.

The member of the House of Representatives Commission I, which oversees information, defense and foreign affairs, was referring to the July 27, 1996 attack on the party's headquarters in Central Jakarta, which resulted in the deaths of dozens of party members.

Sutiyoso was Jakarta Military commander during the incident, in which scores of loyalists of current PDI-P chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri were killed.

According to House Speaker Setya Novanto, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has officially endorsed Sutiyoso, who chairs the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI), which is a member of the ruling Great Indonesia Coalition, and Sutiyoso must now undergo a confirmation hearing.(+++)
