he Buru administration in Maluku is planning to issue a bylaw that stipulates that Muslim children in the regency must engage in Koran recital activities held during a designated period. Buru regent Ramli Umasugy said such a bylaw was needed to support the local administration's plan to introduce the so-called Maghrib Mengaji (Reciting Koran after Dusk Prayer) Movement to children in the regency.
'To prepare the bylaw, we are looking to work together with the Religious Affairs Ministry and Buru Legislative Council (DPRD) to carry out thorough deliberation regarding the plan,' Ramli said on Friday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Once it starts, the movement, according to Ramli, will encourage 2,000 Muslim children in the regency to regularly attend Koran recital activities in local mosques. He added that his administration was also planning to include a Koran literacy test as a part of the entrance tests for schools.
'We are hoping to make every mosque not only a place of worship, but also a study center where students can discuss many topics regarding their religious values and hold various religious events,' he said.
