5.8-magnitude quake jolted Timor Island on Tuesday at 1:40 a.m. local time in Belu regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Its epicenter was located 64 kilometers southeast of Belu at a depth of 64 km.
'Tremors were also felt up to Timor Leste. The quake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, but we have urged residents to remain alert in the event of aftershocks,' Kupang Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) head Sudaryono told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
He said the quake was the third in NTT this month. The first quake, measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale, was on June 6 on Sumba Island, Southwest Sumba regency, and its epicenter was 130 km southwest of the regency at a depth of 10 km.
The second quake, measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, was on June 11 on Sumba Island at a depth of 38 km. The epicenter was located 104 km southeast of East Sumba, 116 km southwest of Sabu Raijua, 179 km southeast of Central Sumba and 307 km southwest of Kupang.
