The U.S. Coast Guard said the 286-foot (90 meter) Saint Laurent was headed from Montreal to Toronto when it hit a wall in the Eisenhower Lock in Massena, near the Canadian border, Thursday night.
There were 273 people on board, including 192 French and Swiss passengers and 81 crew members.
The ship's operator, Miami-based FleetPro, said 19 passengers and three crew members were treated at a hospital and released. The company said all the injuries were minor.
Officials said the water was drained from the lock. Crews were assessing the damage before deciding how to remove the vessel.
The Saint Laurent is owned by Nassau, Bahamas-based Adventurer Owner Ltd.
The crash remained under investigation. (dmr)
