he Bogor Police crime unit has arrested five journalists and an NGO worker for allegedly blackmailing a Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry official who they accused of having an affair.
Criminal unit chief Adj. Comr. Auliya Djabar said on Saturday that his personnel apprehended the six people just as they were about to be paid by the victim in a mall in Cibinong, Bogor, West Java.
Auliya said the incident started when the suspects saw the victim and a woman entering a hotel. They then attempted to find out the identity of the victim and tailed him to his house.
'After getting confirmation that the victim was a civil servant, they demanded Rp 100 million [US$7,500] for not exposing the affair in the media,' he said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Saturday.
Auliya said the victim had reported the case to the police prior to the meeting in the mall.
He said the five suspects were journalists in Jakarta and Bogor while the other one worked for an NGO.
'We also confiscated evidence, including the Rp 100 million in cash, cell phones and press cards from the perpetrators,' he said.
