Constituency fund proposal meets strong opposition at House

A

proposal to introduce the payment of constituency funds is unlikely to win majority support of the 560-member House of Representatives at a plenary session on Tuesday as the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) faction has rejected the proposal.

According to the proposal, all 560 legislators would be given Rp 20 billion (US$1.5 million) each per year to develop their electoral districts nationwide.

Hendrawan Supratikno, a PDI-P legislator, said his faction had presented its political stand on the constituency funds and declared its strong opposition in a meeting of the House'€™s legislative committee after the faction received an instruction from party chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri to do so.

The legislative meeting'€™s conclusion will be brought to the House'€™s plenary session on Tuesday.

'€œIf the party chairperson has decided, then the problem is over,'€ he said as quoted by kompas.com.

Besides the PDI-P, NasDem Party, Hanura Party and Golkar Party legislators loyal to Agung Laksono previously expressed their opposition to the proposal for fear that the funds would be misused by legislators and the funds'€™ distribution would trigger wide disparity among regions nationwide. A bigger part of the funds would stay in Java, home to most legislators. (rms)(+++)
