he Home Ministry held a meeting with the House of Representatives' Commission II overseeing regional autonomy on Tuesday to discuss the readiness of regions to hold the upcoming regional elections (Pilkada) on Dec. 9.
A particular issue that will be discussed, said Home Minister Tjahjo Kumolo, will be the proper procedures regarding incumbent leaders who want to withdraw from the elections allegedly due to the inability to establish 'family dynasties' by the Pilkada Law.
'Today we will likely elaborate on financial readiness, as well as the Home Ministry's stance on how incumbent leaders are able to withdraw from their tickets. They shouldn't be able to withdraw from the election just like that, it has to be discussed by the respective City Councils [DPRD],' Tjahjo told reporters at the House complex in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He added that the Home Ministry would not accept resignations or withdrawals by incumbent regional governors or regents unless they were approved by their respective DPRDs, and that the reason for withdrawal must be clearly proven to the DPRDs.
The only official withdrawal letter approved by a DPRD that Tjahjo received this year, he said, was from East Kutai regent Isran Noor of East Kalimantan, who withdrew initially for unclear reasons but was revealed later to have resigned to take the post of the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI) region head.
'An official withdrawal must be done before 25 July,' he said. (hhr)(+++)
