PGN provides natural-gas-fueled power plant in Batam

P

ublicly listed gas distributor PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) has provided a natural gas fueled power plant in Pemping, Batam, Riau Islands, which was inaugurated on Monday evening.

The power plant construction was conducted by PGN in cooperation with the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Special Task Force (SKKMigas) and a consortium of energy companies: PGN'€™s subsidiary PT Transportasi Gas Indonesia, ConocoPhilips and Petro China International Jabung.

PGN corporate secretary Heri Yusup said the gas distributor gave Pemping communities assistance in the form of two gas engine generators with a capacity of 125 kilo Volt Ampere (kVA).

'€œPGN through its subsidiary, TGI, has also developed gas pipe networks to Pemping communities while SKKMigas is facilitating gas supplying from ConocoPhilips,'€ said Heri.

PGN says the amount of gas allocated for the gas engines will reach 50,000 cubic meters per month. This program will absorb Rp 9.24 billion (US$693,000), to which PGN will contribute Rp 6.08 billion of the total cost.

Pemping Island is populated by around 250 families. The island is a spot where gas pipes from various sites across Indonesia meet; but, all this time, Pemping never had access to natural-gas-fueled electricity plants and fully depended on diesel powered plants.

'€œWe are grateful that local residents in one of our outermost islands, Pemping in Batam, can now enjoy an electricity supply 24 hours a day,'€ said Heri, adding that economic activities in Pemping could hopefully increase with the energy supply. (ebf)(+++)
