Rupiah strengthens to Rp 13,296 in morning session

T

he rupiah interbank trade rate moved up 10 points to Rp 13,296 per dollar in Tuesday's first trade session as compared to Rp 13, 306 in the previous trade.

"The rupiah strengthened together with other Asian currencies against the US dollar after the appearance of new hopes in the Euro zone with regard to the Greek debt crisis," Samuel Sekuritas economist Rangga Cipta said as quoted by Antara news agency.

It was reported that Greece submitted a new proposal with significant changes close to what was wanted by the creditors.

However, investors closely monitored the negotiation between Greece and Troika (European Union, Europen Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund) so that the strengthening of the rupiah tended to be limited, Rangga said.

Head of the research unit of Monex Investindo Futures Ariston Tjendra said that European officials expressed confidence that an agreement on assisting Greece could be reached before the end of the Greek debt installment payment to the IMF on June 30, 2013.

Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem, who presided over the meeting, said that the Greek plan constituted a positive step. "Therefore there is a hope for positive results for the Greek debt problem," he said. (hhr)(+++)
