Taiwanese, Chinese face deportation

ifty-eight Taiwanese and Chinese citizens netted in a raid by immigration authorities in Batam, Riau Islands, will be deported for visa misuse.

According to a preliminary investigation, the foreigners entered Indonesia through Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta using visas on arrival, under which visitors may not work.

'€œSome have been on the island for three months, others for only three days,'€ Batam Immigration Office staff member Rafly said as quoted by tribunnews.com.

According to Rafly, the case is a side effect of the government'€™s policy to ease foreign tourist access to the country under Presidential Regulation No. 69/2015 on visas on arrival for foreign visitors.

'€œ[The case] is a result of the policy,'€ Rafly said.

'€œ[The Chinese and Taiwanese citizens] will be deported because only foreigners who benefit Batam are allowed to come to the island. Those who don'€™t contribute will be deported immediately,'€ he added. (rms)(++++)
