PDI-P House faction instructed to help secure Sutiyoso's BIN bid

A

senior Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) lawmaker says that their chairwoman has instructed the PDI-P House faction to secure and support the candidacy of Sutiyoso as National Intelligence Agency (BIN) chief.

PDI-P lawmaker and House of Representatives commission I overseeing intelligence and foreign affairs member Pramono Anung said on Tuesday that the official stance of the PDI-P is to support Sutiyoso'€™s bid as BIN chief because President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo has chosen him directly and personally and that the PDI-P will support the choice of the President.

'€œWhen the President has made his decision, we are obligated to agree with him and support his choice. Today'€™s fit and proper test will go smoothly, I assure you,'€ Pramono told reporters before Sutiyoso'€™s fit and proper test.

He further said that Commission I will provide good judgment for the President regarding Sutiyoso.

Some PDI-P members had previously voiced their concerns over Sutiyoso'€™s candidacy because of his role in the July 27, 1996 incident, known as the '€œKuda Tuli'€ incident, during which the PDI-P party headquarters were stormed by a group of military men, resulting in five deaths and the injury of hundreds.

Sutiyoso was the military commander of the Army in Jakarta during that time. (hhr)(+++)
