Stocks ended a tumultuous trading week with a slight loss on Thursday as investors sought safety ahead of an extended Independence Day weekend. Investors sold after the release of a downbeat report from the International Monetary Fund on Greece's finances as the country prepares for a Sunday vote on terms of its bailout. U.S. markets will be closed Friday.

For the day:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 27.80 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,730.11.

The S&P 500 slipped 0.64 points, less than 0.1 percent, to 2,076.78.

The Nasdaq composite slipped 3.91 points, or less than 0.1 percent, to 5,009.21.

For the week:

The Dow is down 216.57 points, or 1.2 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 24.71 points, or 1.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 71.29 points, or 1.4 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 92.96 points, or 0.5 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 17.88 points, or 0.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 273.16 points, or 5.8 percent. (hhr)
