ATARAM: The West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Food Crops and Horticulture Agency has said that at least 650 hectares (ha) of paddy fields in the province are facing a high risk of harvest failure as a result of drought.
'The average age of paddies in these harvest-failure-prone fields is only 55 days,' the office's Food Crop Production Affairs head, Budi Subagio, said on Friday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Affected paddy fields, according to Budi, include 534 ha in Pajo and Woja districts in Dompu regency and 23 ha in Woha district in Bima regency.
'The paddy fields are facing slight, moderate and severe levels of drought,' he said.
Budi, however, said that the size of such drought-affected areas this year in the province was relatively small compared to last year, which saw 9,545 ha affected.
'Many areas in the province face drought every year. So, during the current long dry season, we always ask farmers to grow crops instead of rice,' he said.
