police officer from the Tanjung Priok precinct has absconded after the fatal shooting of a 45-year-old resident of Sungai Bambu, North Jakarta, identified as Jufri 'Jamal' Pasaribu.
Jamal had been reported to the police by another Sungai Bambu resident named Suprapto who alleged that Jamal was vandalizing Suprapto's property and threatening his family. Jamal, who according to witnesses was under the influence of alcohol, tried to evade the police, at which point an officer opened fire.
The unidentified police officer was reported to have run off after the incident.
Jamal's family is planning to file a report against the Tanjung Priok Police, said Jamal's sister, Intan, as quoted by kompas.com.
Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Tito Karnavian said the police's internal affairs would investigate the case.
'Officers who are found to have violated procedures will be subject to criminal punishment,' Tito said, adding that no punishment, however, would be imposed if the shot was in line with police procedures.
