he South Jakarta Police will summon on Wednesday a 47-year-old resident of Cipulir, Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta, who was reported by the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) for allegedly abusing her 12-year-old son.
Detective chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Audie Latuheru said the police would question the woman after receiving her son's medical examination results, which were expected to be issued in two days from Pertamina Central hospital (RSPP).
'We cannot yet determine whether the wounds were from abuse or self-inflicted by the boy, whom his mother claims is hyperactive. Let the medical examination speak,' Audie said on Saturday after talking to the mother, initials SR, at her house, accompanied by the South Jakarta Police's Women and Children Protection (PPA) unit, KPAI, and NGO the Family Number One (FNO) Community.
Audie said he had observed several scars on the boy's body, including three scratches on the left hand, right cheek and under the left ear, as well a swelling on the right cheek.
PPA unit head Adj. Comr. Nunu Supadmi showed a photo of the boy to reporters, showing a scar on his right that apparently resulted from a serious injury.
Audie said the boy had accused his mother of attacking him with a saw and throwing a bowl at him, but the police declined to confirm that.
KPAI previously released a message on Friday stating that a mother in South Jakarta had attacked her son with a saw after the commission got no response from the South Jakarta Police, to whom they reported the woman on Monday.
A scar on the boy's arm might have been caused by a saw, police said.
KPAI claimed that the police had been slow to respond because of the woman's alleged connections to the military.
KPAI secretary-general Erlinda said the commission had reported the woman after receiving a report from a neighbor in whose house the child had sought refuge, claiming his mother had abused him.
Investigators, Audie added, had interviewed three witnesses last Wednesday, comprising the 37-year-old neighbor, 48-year-old Zainuddin, the neighborhood unit head, and the boy himself, who was accompanied by a psychologist.
Audie said the mother, a divorcee, lived with her eldest daughter, 14, and youngest son, 6. SR claims never to have abused her son.
'The mother said the boy was hyperactive and naughty. The psychologist who is handling him right now also says that,' Audie said.
The two other children were still with their mother and looked fine, playing and joking in the house during the police visit, Audie added.(foy)
