he government has allocated Rp 3.6 trillion (US$270.9 million) for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of areas affected by the eruption of Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra.
'The funds will be disbursed for long-term use because the eruptions will last for the next five years,' the head of data and information center at the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPNP), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said as quoted by tempo.co on Tuesday.
Of the total budget, the government would allocate Rp 1.68 trillion for a dam construction to prevent cold lava from entering residential areas, Sutopo added.
Sutopo also said that the government had set aside Rp 352.5 billion to rebuild houses destroyed by the natural disaster.
The government has also prepared Rp 1.27 trillion to stimulate the local economy.
The disaster has destroyed orange farms, which had been a source of revenue for local people. The allocated money, Sutopo said, would assist people to find new employment.
BNBP's current focus is to build new houses for 307 families in three villages, which were severely damaged by the eruption.
Sutopo added that the government's rehabilitation and reconstruction program for the Sinabung disaster had been arranged until 2017. (ika)(++++)
