The East Java Police have arrested a man for allegedly attempting to trade wild protected eagles on social media.
"After buying the birds from hunters, the man identified by his initials of PAS tried to sell them through Facebook," director of investigation and special crimes of the East Java Police Sr. Comr. M.
Nurrahman said in Surabaya on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.
During the arrest, police officers seized one Javan hawk-eagle, one crested hawk-eagle, two eaglets and six spotted kestrels.
Two dead sea eagles were also confiscated together with evidence such as boxes, a bird cage and a bird perch.
The suspect had been trading wild and protected birds of prey for six months, Nurrahman alleged.
"Each bird was sold for about Rp 2 million [around US$150]," he added.
After the deal was finalized on Facebook, the purchased bird waspacked in a box and delivered by courier to the buyer once the buyerhad transferred money to the trader's bank account.
The man will be charged under Law No. 5/1990 on the conservation ofthe ecosystem and natural resources and government regulation No.
7/1999 on protected animals and plants, which carry a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment or a fine of Rp100 million. (hhr)(++++)
