Islands in focus: NTT council calls for halt to airport project

E

ast Nusa Tenggara (NTT) legislative council speaker Anwar Pua Geno has urged the provincial administration to shelve a plan to build an airport on Adonara Island, East Flores, given protests from land owners who currently use the land for farming.

'€œThe legislature recently found out the government would build the Adonara airport following complaints from land owners who opposed the government'€™s plan. Based on this, the council demanded that feasibility studies currently being carried out be stopped,'€ Anwar told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

He asked whether the airports in Larantuka and Lewoleba were inadequate to serve passengers in the region and questioned why the airport in Adonara should be built.

'€œThe airport is not economically feasible. The airport project should be stopped. Moreover, the government has planned to build the Palmerah Bridge connecting Flores Island in Larantuka and Adonara Island at a cost of Rp 750 billion [US$55.5 million].

'€œIt shouldn'€™t be built just because Adonara is the home village of the governor and so all development projects are directed there,'€ Anwar quipped.

NTT Transportation Office head Richard Djami claimed he was unaware of the request from the NTT legislature to stop the airport project.
