strong earthquake has shaken the sparsely populated region along the border between Colombia and Panama. There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Service says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.9. It says the epicenter was about 17 miles (29 kilometers) south of the Colombian town of Acandi. It occurred about 6 miles (10 kilometers) below the surface.

The tremor hit at 7:10 p.m. EDT (0010 GMT).
