The U.S. Geological Service says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.9. It says the epicenter was about 17 miles (29 kilometers) south of the Colombian town of Acandi. It occurred about 6 miles (10 kilometers) below the surface.
The tremor hit at 7:10 p.m. EDT (0010 GMT).
