s many as 15 drivers of the 502 Kopaja minibus route, which travels from Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta, to Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, staged a strike to protest the city's new policy that prohibited them from picking up passengers in front of the Tanah Abang station.
The Jakarta Transportation Cooperative (Kopaja) deputy chairman Widodo revealed that 15 buses on the route did not operate on Tuesday. Widodo said under the new policy, 502 Kopaja buses could only pick up passengers just several hundred meters from Jl. Jatibaru, Central Jakarta.
'The drivers are disappointed because the Transportation Agency does not prohibit other [minivan] drivers from picking up passengers in Tanah Abang station. Our drivers complained that their income has significantly decreased, so they went on a strike to protest the agency,' Widodo said as quoted by kompas.com.
He said the cooperative did not support the protest and would persuade the drivers to operate again in the afternoon.
