Global stocks steadied and U.S. markets advanced Tuesday as investors were encouraged by strong results from UPS, Ford and other big companies. The recovery comes after five straight days of losses for U.S. indexes.
For the day:
The Dow Jones industrial average added 189.68 points, or 1.1 percent, to 17,630.27.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 25.61 points, or 1.2 percent, to 2,093.25.
The Nasdaq composite rose 49.43 points, or 1 percent, to 5,089.21.
For the week:
The Dow is up 61.74 points, or 0.4 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 13.60 points, or 0.7 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 0.58 of a point, or 0.01 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 192.80 points, or 1.1 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 34.35 points, or 1.7 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 353.15 points, or 7.5 percent. (*)
