KPU rejects candidates with one-sided endorsement from infighting parties

I

nfighting within the Golkar Party and the United Development Party (PPP) has affected mayoral candidates from these parties. The internal conflict between factions has resulted in both parties currently having dual leadership camps.

The General Elections Commission (KPU) in several regions has rejected the candidacy of a few mayoral hopefuls who are only backed by one camp of the party.

Golkar candidate Jeffrie Polii was rejected by the regional KPU of Tomohon in North Sulawesi because he was only backed by Agung Laksono'€™s faction in Golkar.

'€œWe will appeal the KPU'€™s decision [denying the candidacy]. Golkar, having won the general election, will surely propose its own candidates,'€ said Jeffrie on Tuesday as quoted by Tribunnews.com. In the later part of that quote, Jeffrie was referring to Abu Rizal Bakrie'€™s faction within Golkar that opted instead to give their support to incumbent candidate Jimmy Eman.

KPU Tomohon, through its head of legal division Ferlansius Pangalila, has stated that such a candidacy did not meet the requirements set in KPU Regulations (PKPU), particularly regarding the part where recommendation from both camps was compulsory.

The registration documents have been returned to the candidates to complete the necessary requirement. However, the deadline for registration already passed on July 28.

Head of KPU Tomohon Beldie Tombeg continues to wait on information from KPU headquarters on whether it is possible to extend registration dates based on such a problem. KPU so far has issued extensions on the registration process for regions with only one registered candidate.

'€œWe are waiting to see if the context [of the extension] is only for regions with one candidate or not,'€ said Beldie. (rad/kes) (+++)
