Seven climbers reported missing on Mount Lawu

S

even climbers, two of them children, have reportedly lost contact while climbing to the top of Mount Lawu in Karanganyar in Central Java.

As of Tuesday night, the climbers, all aged between eight to 18 years old and originating from the Sumber district in Banjarsari regency in Surakarta, were still being searched for by the search and rescue (SAR) team and volunteers.

According to Karanganyar Nugroho, head of the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the climbers passed through the Cemoro Kandang climbing post on Saturday at 8 a.m. and should have come down by the same post on Tuesday afternoon.

"But as of Tuesday night, they'€™ve not yet been seen and they'€™ve even lost contact with the outside world," said Nugroho.

Separately, Kapolsek Tawangmangu AKP Riyanto confirmed the reports of the missing climbers.

"I have received reports that there was a climber who met them at the top of the mountain. We are still waiting for the latest progress from the SAR team and volunteers," said Riyanto. (kes) (++++)
