Islands in focus: Court rejects Margriet'€™s pretrial petition

T

he Denpasar District Court rejected on Wednesday a pretrial petition filed by Margriet Megawe, a suspect in the murder case of her adoptive daughter Engeline Margret Megawe. The sole judge presiding over the trial, Achmad Peten Sili, said that none of the plaintiff'€™s arguments were valid.

'€œAll arguments proposed by the plaintiff were legally unwarranted and were thus rejected,'€ judge Achmad Peten Sili said.

Margriet'€™s legal team, led by prominent lawyer Hotma Sitompul, had argued that police had named Margriet a suspect without sufficient evidence, and asked the court to annul the police decision.

The judge said that the evidence submitted by the Bali Police legal team had fulfilled the required minimum of two pieces of evidence to name Margriet a suspect.

Engeline'€™s body was found buried in the backyard of Margriet'€™s house in Denpasar on June 10 after the family reported that the 8-year-old child had been missing for a month. The case made headlines after the family created a Facebook page asking for donations to help find the child.
