p to 18 flights at Notohadinegoro Airport in Jember regency, East Java, have been canceled due to the eruption of Mount Raung over the last few days.
Standing at 3,332 meters above sea level, the mountain has continuously erupted since its status was raised from waspada (alert) to siaga (high alert) on June 29.
'The volcanic ash heading toward Jember has caused the Notohadinegoro Airport to close down. The airport opened briefly at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, but it was still thickly hazed, and so Garuda decided to cancel its flights to Surabaya,' said Notohadinegoro airport's technical management (UPT) head Edy Purnomo as quoted by Antara news agency.
The disaster has caused national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia to cancel 14 flights from Jember to Surabaya and Susi Air to call off four of its Jember-Sumenep flights.
