Traditional Javanese singer Sruti Respati was happy performing popular keroncong folk songs at Galeri Indonesia Kaya in Jakarta on Saturday.
The singer is renowned for her crossover singing ability ' capable of mixing her original vocals, regularly featured in gamelan orchestras, with jazz and keroncong.
In Jakarta, she was performing to welcome the country's upcoming Independence Day, which falls on Aug. 17 in a show alongside noted writer Putu Fajar Arcana who read a monolog titled Doa & Cinta (Love and Prayer).
'I'm happy ['¦]. Although I was presenting original keroncong arrangements, the audience remained enthusiastic. Some were even singing along with me. I think it shows many Indonesians still love our culture and it's our job to preserve it,' Sruti said.
