he Minangkabau International Airport (BIM) in Padang, West Sumatra, was forced to close down for 14 hours after Citilink flight QG970 from Jakarta skidded on the runway as it landed at 7:27 p.m. local time on Sunday.
State-run airport authority Angkasa Pura II spokesman Yoserizal said BIM could not operate at its optimum level for accommodating incoming and outgoing flights because the aircraft remained stranded just two meters away from the end of the runway.
'The situation was very risky. Moreover, the weather was really bad on Sunday evening due to heavy rain, so the control tower could not release takeoffs and landings. We are afraid to operate due to the huge risks,' Yoserizal said on Monday.
As a result of the incident, three outgoing flights had been canceled on Sunday evening, while two others were canceled the next morning.
According to Yoserizal, BIM was reopened at 10 a.m. on Monday after the Citilink aircraft was towed to a hangar located 1.5 kilometers away from the runway at 8:50 a.m.
