IIMS to use all means to stay attractive

T

he Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS), in the past touted as one of Southeast Asia'€™s major auto exhibitions, will make concerted efforts to remain attractive for visitors against competition from another auto exhibition to be held by the Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers Association (Gaikindo).

Among the strategies for bolstering the show to run from Aug. 20 to 30 would be to team up with local-branded cars, such as the Fin Komodo, assembled by West Java-based PT Fin Tetra Indonesia, and the Tawon, made by Banten-based PT Super Gasindo Jaya, and engage automotive component makers, including small and medium enterprises (SMEs), said Ichwan Sofwan, the general manager of PT Dyandra Promosindo, which organizes the event.

Unlike in previous years, the exhibition would also display 16 motorcycle brands, such as Ducati, Harley Davidson, Italjet, Benelli and BMW Motorrad, he said, acknowledging that previous shows had not given sufficient space for two-wheelers.

That will add to the 36 automobile brands planning to join the event at the Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo) in Kemayoran, comprising prominent brands like Honda, Nissan, Datsun, Hyundai, Ford, Chevrolet, Audi, BMW and Land Rover.

Ichwan expressed optimism that the number of visitors would remain or even increase in this year'€™s event, despite rivalry from the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). '€œI am optimistic we will be able to bring back our 380,000 visitors [to this year'€™s expo],'€ Ichwan said, referring to the number of visitors at the expo last year. However, he said the organizer did not set a sales target for the event.

During last year'€™s exhibition, IIMS sold 19,746 vehicles, which amounted to a record high value of Rp 5.45 trillion (US$404 million).

The expo may provide a boost to automakers as car sales, a key indicator of consumption in Southeast Asia'€™s largest economy, has dwindled throughout this year following a downward trend already seen last year.

Four-wheeler sales tumbled by 15.3 percent to 525,458 units in the first half of this year from 2014, as people'€™s purchasing power weakened in an economic slowdown.

As it is themed, '€œThe Essence of Motor Show,'€ IIMS will display not only automotive items for sale, but also auto-related performances, such as stunt-motorcycle rides, free-style motorcycle rides, along with other programs, such as Movie Cars, which displays exotic cars used in Hollywood movies, according to Ichwan.
