Australia remains determined to seek justice for the victims of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, and will work with Malaysia to set up an effective prosecution model to try those responsible.
Australia's foreign minister Julie Bishop said the nation was committed to the implementation of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2166, which demands that those responsible for the incident be held accountable and that all states fully cooperate with efforts to ensure accountability.
"We thank Malaysia for efforts to establish an ad-hoc international crimes tribunal through the UNSC to try those responsible for the bringing down of MH17.
'We deeply appreciate Malaysia's efforts, we deeply regret Russia's veto of the draft resolution on July 29," she said in her opening remarks at an Asean-Australia dialogue here Wednesday.
Flight MH17 was en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam on July 17, 2014 when it was downed over Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board, including 39 Australians.
"We will not allow impunity when it comes to the bringing down of a commercial airline in commercial airspace with innocent victims on board.
"It sends a dangerous message to terrorists and non-state actors that the community is too weak to unite to resolve the crime," said Bishop.
Bishop added that Australia passed on its concern and thoughts to Malaysia over the disappearance of MH370, about 16 months ago.
"There is some hope that we may be closer to finding a solution, but in the meantime, Australia will continue to lead the search efforts in the search areas of both oceans," she said.(++++)
