60 million Indonesians without sanitation

A

round 60 million Indonesians, or 39 percent of the total population, do not have access to proper toilets, causing disease and even death, an official has stated.

'€œAs a result, 5 million babies in Indonesia face the risk of death,'€ said Rina Agustin, secretary director general of the Public Works and People'€™s Housing Ministry, as quoted by kompas.com on Wednesday.

Data from UNICEF shows that many babies have died shortly after birth due to limited access to sanitation and clean water. Rina said recently that this issue was faced in every city and regency in the country.

Rina admitted that sanitation had not been a priority for the Indonesian government, with its budget allocation in her view set at only 20 percent of the required amount.

She called on all levels of government to work together to provide clean sanitation for the public. (ika)(++++)
