Islands in focus: UGM and Harvard join forces

G

adjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta is working together with the Harvard Medical School to empower mental health workers based on local culture to overcome mental illness issues in the province.

'€œAs an initial step, we will prepare mental health workers at five puskesmas [community health clinics] in four regencies,'€ said program coordinator Subandi on Monday.

The health workers are important because the province has the highest number of schizophrenia patients. Based on a study on basic health in 2013, 16,000 people had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, or a prevalence rate of 4.6 per 1,000 people, he said.

'€œThis is the highest prevalence rate in Indonesia,'€ the UGM School of Psychology professor said.

On the other hand, the number of people dealing with mental health issues, such as psychiatrist, psychologists, doctors, nurses and health workers is limited.
