Islands in focus: Stray dog cull continues as rabies on rise

B

ali'€™s provincial husbandry agency is continuing its effort to curb rabies by culling stray dogs across the island.

'€œRabies can easily spread among stray dogs as they usually bite each other. To curb rabies, it is essential to control stray dogs by culling them,'€ agency head I Putu Sumantra said on Wednesday.

Although tens of thousands of stray dog have been culled, Sumantra said, the agency would continue with the cull as there were still many stray dogs across the island.

Agency data reveals that Bali has a population of 500,000 dogs. Of these, around 25 percent are stray dogs and another 70 percent are owned by residents but left to run wild. Only the remaining 5 percent are properly cared for.
