n an effort to curb the circulation of food containing harmful additives, such as formaldehyde and borax, the Jakarta Small and Medium Enterprises Cooperatives Agency (KUMKMP) conducted unannounced inspections on Saturday at a number of school canteens.
'These inspections were a form of protection for consumers. But as of now, we have yet to find any indication of noxious products being sold,' KUMKMP supervision and control unit head Ety Syartika said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
Among the canteens inspected were those located at state elementary school SDN 07 Kramat Pela in South Jakarta, private junior high school SMP Lab School in South Jakarta, state elementary school SDN 03 Cibubur in East Jakarta and state elementary school SDN 02 Pramuka Island in the Thousand Islands.
Ety said that aside from the random inspections, which involved the Jakarta Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM), her institution had also been taking preventive measures to keep school students away from dangerous products.
'Children usually don't have enough understanding of such harmful foods. We have to explain about the characteristics so that they can be more cautious when buying snacks,' she said.
